Not Your Average Commuter: Carolanne Gariépy

Born on the Côte-de-Beaupré in Quebec and now based in St-Denis de Brompton, Carolanne Gariépy is a physiotherapist, cycling enthusiast, and Arkel ambassador. For the past three years, she has embraced bike commuting as part of her lifestyle — a way to combine efficiency, well-being, and joy.

“Two priceless things keep me going: the mental clarity I get in the morning, and the freedom I feel when I can fully disconnect from work on the ride home.”

The daily ride

Her commute is about 20 km each way, sometimes longer if she chooses a detour. Mostly paved roads with a mix of busy streets and bike paths, she rides through nearly any weather — except snow, when safety becomes an issue.

Her motto? “I don’t overthink it. I just get dressed and go!”

Arkel gear that makes the difference

Carolanne relies on the Burrito bag (small or large, depending on the day) for spare clothes and snacks, paired with an Arkel saddle bag for her repair tools.

The combo offers lightweight, waterproof, quick-to-mount storage — far more comfortable than carrying a backpack for longer rides.

The benefits

Time-efficient, car-free, and above all… a boost to mental health. For Carolanne, commuting means:

  1. More time outdoors,

  2. Observing, breathing,

  3. Being present in the moment.

Challenges and solutions

With long shifts that can run until 9 p.m., logistics can be tricky. But Carolanne has figured out her system: preparing meals and clothes early in the week, traveling as light as possible, and adapting her schedule when needed.

Her advice for aspiring commuters

“Start slowly, without pressure. Take time to notice the benefits on your body and mind. And above all, get the right gear: proper clothing, panniers, and a well-fitted bike!”

For Carolanne, the commute is more than a trip — it’s a daily dose of freedom and balance.
